A recent assessment undertaken by Oxford Economics sought to investigate the value of the franchise business model to workers, entrepreneurs and local communities. In the study, more than 4000 independent franchise owners were contacted to provide a detailed picture of franchising in America.

Three key findings of the ‘Value of Franchising’ report are that franchise businesses:

  • Are diverse in industry and ownership and committed to their local communities
  • Provide better pay and benefits than non-franchised businesses
  • Offer entrepreneurial opportunities that would not otherwise be available, especially to women, people of color and veterans

For David Paulson, Senior Vice President, Franchise Development, at TaxAssist Accountants, the report highlights the fundamental benefits of franchising. He said: “This report makes for fantastic reading on the strength and depth of franchising. It is such a powerful mechanism for providing opportunity to all – and has a key role to play in the economy, particularly as we head into the recovery period post covid.

“Perhaps most interesting for me, was the stat that almost one third of survey respondents said that they would not own a business without franchising. The brand, backup, training and support provided by a franchisor is key, and it is the extra confidence and expertise provided to franchisees which enables people to make the step into self-employment and to run a successful business.”
